Saturday: leaving Takapuna and driving to the town of Putaruru and Whites Road, where we will walk alongside the Waihou River,  the track winds through wetlands, across rolling pastures and small waterfalls to the most beautiful turquoise waters of the blue springs. an easy graded leisurely track that’s a bit far for us as a day trip, so we have combined it to make it a weekend away.  Make sure to pack your camera for this scenic spectacle. We will then head towards Matamata and our accommodation at the Opal Hot Springs located at 257 Okauia Road.

There will be a dinner option to drive into Matamata for dinner Saturday night.

Sunday: a 30-minute drive takes us to the Start of one of the most spectacular parts of the Kaimai ridgeline, with spectacular views! Not for the faint hearted! You will need reasonable fitness! a head for heights, possess scrambling and ladder climbing techniques. It can be a little exposed where we are heading! But I know we can all manage this one.

We will start from Wairakau road on the Western side of the ranges and head up the Tuahu track to the North South track junction and head South, where the fun ramps up a level or two. Our destination will be Motuapere hut, on the way sidling around and over some spectacular rock pinnacles with breath taking views to the East and West of the ranges eventually arriving at Motuapere Hut for a break and a view of Sentinel Rock. We will either head back the way we came or take the unmarked old deer cullers track down a steepish ridge into a pine forest and pass the Killarney Lakes completing a circuit returning to the bus before heading back to Takapuna.
