Dome Valley Walkway
Cost: Please ensure you bring correct cash on the day: $20 members, $25 non-members, UniClub members $0 (covered by grant funds).
This track is part of Te Araroa (the long pathway) and the full traverse of the valley goes point-to-point between Govan Wilson Road, north of Matakana and Waiwhiu, SH1 - about 12km in total and 4½-5 hours tramping. It visits Dome Forest lookout and summit, following the ridgeline through the forest. Part is on a 4WD road. Expect great views including a mystical grove featuring some very old Kauri trees.
The walk starts fairly easy going but turns into a serious tramping track (total of 670m elevation gain) - make sure you are nice and fit for this one. You can expect mud and tree roots, so good grippy shoes or boots and gaiters are recommended.
Current plan is to take an 'in-and-out' tramp from the bus, parked at SH1 Waiwhiu. If two drivers are available, it may be possible to complete the whole traverse. In either case, it's an excellent day out and the weather forecast is looking good...
