Southern Pureora & Hauhungaroa Range
Labour weekend - Saturday 24th – 26th October

We visited the Northern part of Pureora earlier in the year, this trip gives us a chance to visit and explore the Southern section of Pureora, Lake Taupo’s Western side and the Haungaroa Range. You may want to pack your swimming kit as there may be a chance to take a dip in the lovely Waihaha river to cool off!
Tents to be carried!

A drive off about 20 minutes will take us to the Waihaha carpark, from the carpark carry some water and a lunch leaving your main pack on the bus and take the Great Lakes Trail heading down towards Lake Taupo, you will get views from high above the Waihaha canyon of the 37-meter high Tieke falls along the way, the trail continues high above the cliffs giving you extensive views of Lake Taupo, before returning the same way back to the carpark and collecting your pack before crossing the road to head up the Waihaha hut track following the picturesque and refreshing Waihaha river before crossing a bridge and beginning a easy medium climb on to a plateau with a mixture of grasslands, scrub and forest and arriving at the Waihaha hut clearing which is surrounded by a superb collection of some of New Zealand’s grandest Podocarps, it’s from here we may wish to press on for about 1 hour on fairly easy going terrain to set up camp beside the peaceful Waihaha river for the night.
