Tairua River / Second Branch River
Medium Fit to Fit only for this one!
This is an unmarked track, rough and not a DOC maintained track, as this will be our first time to this location, you will need to be off good medium fitness to fit fitness, good and confident on your feet in rough ground and possible slippery rocks, as well as confident in river crossings.
This expedition will start on private farmland along Puketui valley road just before the Broken hill’s campsite. We cross over private farmland and follow some sort of old Kauri logging route that goes up the valley from the farm through dense forest eventually leading us into the First branch river bed, which will require wet feet, possibly rock scrambling as we bash up the river crossing it several times to our first and main objective, a climbing crag at Pt695 and below it some sort of camping spot, anybody wishing to climb the crag bring your climbing gear and I will watch and film you from below! If we make good time to the crag, I will set a turn around time for a faster group to carry on up the river as far as they can towards the old dam or the branch just below the Pinnacles, there are canyons and water falls that should slow your progress down. Bring your swimming kit, as there will be opportunities for a dip along the way if you haven’t already had a dip by then! A perfect little adventure for a hot time of the year!
You will need plenty of drinking water, as there is no supply on this track!
