Lake Tarawera Weekend: An ideal introduction to overnight tramping and camping
Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th February NOTE: 7:30am Start from Como Street
While the trip will cater for gazelles, this weekend is the perfect introduction for those want to attempt overnight tramping and camping. Camp fees are included in the price. There is the option of a water taxi back to the bus on Sunday but this will need to be booked and paid directly by those who chose this option: https://www.totallytarawera.com/hot-water-beach-te-rata-bay/ .
An easy/medium six-hours, including a stop for lunch and a soak in the hot pools. We will walk to the stunning campsite, nestled on the edge of the lake at Te Rata Bay, for a night's camping. Campsite has a shelter for cooking and non-flush toilets.
The track itself is a well maintained, undulating track, crossing several trout filled streams (bridged). Vegetation varies from podocarp forest, stands of kanuka, and gullies filled with ferns reaching several metres high.
We will split into two parties to allow the gazelles to race on ahead. They will have coffee and biscuits ready upon the the arrival of the more leisurely trampers.
Note: A tent, sleeping bag & mattress and cooking gear are required - the club has several tents available for free to club members.
Cost - $90 (Transport $72 plus campsite $18) To be paid in full no later than 1st Feb.
