Waitekauri
Medium Fit – Fit
Waitekauri was once a flourishing town and now all that remains is farmland, regenerating bush, and an historic gold mining area between Paeroa and Waihi that is seldom visited and has many relics, mines, and history from times past.
The tramp starts across private farmland following the remnants of the Alpha Road leading us onto a section of gorse and cutty grass before eventually heading into regenerating bush, we head up Alpha Road which is a steady climb and eventually we arrive at the Horse whim (a devise used in mining for hauling materials to the surface) from there it’s a steep decent down the gully to view a couple of Adit’s (a horizontal passage leading into a mine) so make sure you bring a headlamp! Next, we will take the short but very steep climb up to view the old steam boiler, and a perfect spot for a well-earned lunch break before looping around to arrive back at the horse whim. If we make good time, there will be plenty more of this area that I am keen to explore before we head back to the bus.
This area is not a DOC maintained area or tracks, they are advanced tramping tracks, they can be slippery & muddy and vague in direction. YOU will require a good level of fitness, balance, and agility, as well as appropriate footwear! Gaiters are recommended, and a headlamp. This will be your last chance to have a workout before Christmas, and you can expect a long day!
YOU will also require plenty of drinking water!!!
