Awhitu West Coast Tramp
On this Easy/Medium tramp we start from Waimatuku/Hamilton's Gap on the west coast of the Awhitu Peninsula and walk north on a black sand beach beneath towering white sandstone cliffs. The surf breaks near the base of the cliffs at high tide but we avoid this by starting two hours before a midday low tide. Prior to the 18th Century, sand extended kilometers offshore forming the ancient land of Paorae, which was cultivated by Maori.

Rounding Manukau South Head we will see some interesting rock outcrops and look across the harbour entrance to beautiful Whatipu and the southern Waitakere Ranges.
Straightforward walking on firm sand and rocky shore platforms, with a final short interesting scramble over the promontory of Taratara Point/Cake Island before meeting the bus at Wattle Bay (14.5 km total).
