This will be a chance to experience the northern end of the mighty Kaimanawa Forest Park, gateway to the tramping and hunting heartland of the Kaimanawa Forest Park! All parties can expect some river crossings and good practice for those who will be participating in the upcoming Christmas trip!
Friday
Te Iringa campsite, sleep on the bus or Tent, both parties.
Fit Party
Saturday
From beside the helicopter hanger at Taharua road end, follow the long 12.3 k poled access route through Poronui Station. Near the upper reaches of the Mohaka River a new track links from the end of the poled route, passing Oamaru Hut via a crossing of the Kaipo River, follow the Omaru River along the Omaru-Boyd track and camp at the beginning of the Maungarorangi track. Expect a few river crossings and about 8 hours.
Sunday
This will be a more strenuous day. Follow the Maungarorangi track with a climb up to Mt Maungarorangi and its open tops for views at Pt1436, from here it’s about 1.8 kilometers to the Waiatupuritia Saddle before heading on an easier route to Cascade Hut. About 9 hours. You will need one blue DOC hut ticket @ $10.00 if you stay in the hut, 6 bunks.
Monday
Take the Hinemaiaia track to the waiting bus at Clements Road end campsite. 4.5 hours.
Medium Party
Saturday
After dropping the fit party off we head to the end of Clements Road end campsite, take the Hinemaiaia track, about the first few kilometers should be reasonably easy going through beach forest before a climb up over Pt1240 and then follow the ridge line before dropping down steeply to the catchment area that leads us to Cascade hut and a little explore around. 4.5 hours. You will need one blue DOC hut ticket @ $10.00 if you stay in the hut, 6 bunks.
Sunday
From Cascade Hut head in a southeast direction a short distance to the junction of the Maungarorangi track and Kaipo River track, go over the bridge that takes you over the Cascade Stream, then climb up and over the Kaipo saddle and follow the Kaipo River and camp near the swing bridge. About 6 hours.
Monday
From the swing bridge take the Te Iringa to the Te Iringa Campsite. 4.5 hours and wait for the bus.
We will need two drivers preferably for this trip, if we only have one, we will have a Driver’s party medium
Saturday
The same as the medium party head to Cascade Hut.
You will need two blue DOC hut ticket @ $10.00 if you stay in the hut, 6 bunks.
Sunday
Day trip up to Mt Maungarorangi and its open tops for views, and return to Cascade Hut for the night, about 6 hours.
Monday
From Cascade Hut return with the fit party back to the bus, pick up the medium party for the drive back to Takapuna.
