This is a popular Waitakere Ranges tramp that has only been re-opened in the last couple of years due to Kauri Dieback. So the track has had extensive track improvements - gravel, bridges and boardwalks. It has some of the most impressive kauri stands in New Zealand and is worthy of a repeat visit even if you have done it before.
Please make sure all your gear is clean to help protect these magnificent kauri trees: boots or shoes, walking poles, packs (as they'll ground contact during breaks) need to be clean.
IMPORTANT, please bring a change of footwear for after & a bag to put your dirty footwear in and PLEASE remember to thoroughly clean your gear afterwards too.
There are a lot of stairs either way as we head up the approximately 11km loop track, plus we may head along the Long Road Track to check out a lookout, where you can see both east and west coast oceans. The footing here is good, but steep, so you'll need good fitness to do the tramp. The total elevation gain for the day will be over 500m.
There will be plenty of photo opportunities of the Kauri forest and the lovely river at the foot of the mountains.
* For those that live in the Waitakeres or nearby and drive there, all our tramping bus passengers will alight and meet at the bottom block of toilets at Falls Road, Waitakere Ranges (please advise organiser if meeting us there).
