North Shore Tramping Club
Huia / Waitakere’s - Mini Weekend
10th to 11th of May $40 cost.
Tents to be carried - Please note Como Street departure point.
Medium Fit
You must book this trip before the 7th of May!
Trail shoes or boots will be fine for this one.
If you like to test yourself and your gear out with an overnight tramp, or just a weekend away, then this one has been designed for you! MUATC members are welcomed as well, & if you are not sure on what to bring, I can arrange a meeting at Massey University to discuss gear, food and any queries you may have, or who can contact me on Messenger, whatsapp, txt, or cell phone. The NSTC also has a limited amount of gear you can borrow.
Saturday
We will start this tramp at Huia Bay and take the Karamatura track which climbs steeply at first, before we head down on the Donald Mclean track, Puriri ridge track, and the spectacular Omanawanui track giving us good views of the wild and powerful flow of water from the Tasman Sea that enters and exits the Manukau Heads. It’s at the Manukau bar as you enter the Heads that marks New Zealand worst ever maritime disaster on the 7th of February 1863 with the sinking of the HMS Orpheus and the loss of 189 lives. The track will lead us down to where the settlement of Whatipu used to be long ago, from there it’s another steepish climb up the Gibbons track before we descend the Muir track to camp the night at Pararaha valley campsite. Expect a good workout and about 6 hours tramping.
Sunday
If the tides are good, we will return to Whatipu via the beach and then and then retrace our foot steeps from there back to the bus.
