Members Please register for this trip. Leaving from The Strand at 8.30am. Please ensure you have a boot bag and clean footwear for the return trip. Dirty boots are not to be worn in the bus.

Start from the Repeater Road carpark, follow a bush lined 4WD track up for about 10 minutes where a short sidetrack leads to a viewing platform overlooking the Upper Mangatawhiri Dam, and beyond that, the steep valleys of the Hunua’s.

Then on to the Mangatawhiri Challenge Track to as far as Pt 396 there is a basic campsite about 200 meters up, we will visit, for more views before we back track and head down the Wairoa loop track, characterized by Ponga’s and Nikau palms and following a stream, and on to Otau Road for a wee bit, before we start the popular Suspension bridge track, resulting in a climb to start with before descending to the Wairoa dam.

From there we will rejoin the Wairoa loop track and head up to the Wairoa look out, which commands elevated views of the catchment area, before heading up to reconnect with Repeater Road and back to the bus. This loop track is a well benched track and has lots to offer. It is one of the best loop tracks in the Huna rangers.
