POSTPONED - Clubs 53nd Birthday Trip, Rangitoto Island, Hauraki Maritime Park - kid & teen friendly

  • 5 Sep 2021
  • 9:15 AM
  • Downtown Ferry Terminal or Devonport Ferry Terminal

*  Please note postponed due to Covid at 24 Aug 2021, will update with new event date when we reach Level 1.

Join us for a very special trip to Rangitoto. Our annual club anniversary trip to this Pohutukawa-forested volcanic island this year marks the club’s 53rd Anniversary and will repeat the first trip the club made all those years ago, back in 1968 to this incredible treasure island.

We always encourage young people to come out tramping with the club, but this event is even more special, as we'd love for you to bring your kids, younger relatives and teenagers tramping (minors must be accompanied by an adult).
We will have different distance options to suit all ages, from young to young at heart and there are earlier ferries back if needed.

There are options to tramp through to McKenzie Bay, and around the back of the Island to Islington Bay and back to Rangitoto wharf (about 20 km). Another option is to enjoy the views at the NSTC seat on the way up to the summit and see the amazing lava caves. There’s also another track the club doesn’t usually do, which was very popular in previous years.  Or another Long party can head out to the back of the island through the old lava flow to Wreck (Boulder) Bay where in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, where ships were run aground once they were past their useful life.  The ship skeletons are very visible at low tide, with a useful informal sign about each ship’s history.

Also not to be missed the Kidney Fern Grove and the Kowhai Grove that should be in full stunning bloom with Tui feasting on the nectar.
The island has a big increase in native bird life the last 5 years, maybe due to the success of other neighbouring islands.

Bring your camera/phone for awesome photos, and a torch if you’d like to go to the lava caves and maybe swim wear/towel as it's usually about 4 degrees warmer on the island due to the volcanic scoria.

Please ensure ALL your gear is completely clean, please read the Treasure Island Bio-security here:
