Mini Weekend tramp. Te Whare Okioki Hut, lower Kaimai Ranges

17th to 18th July. 12 bunks

Leaving Como Street, Takapuna 8.00am Saturday 17th July

Drive time approx. 3 hours

Saturday. We will be leaving from the Whakamarama road end on the eastern side of the Kaimai’s, and tramp along the lovely rambling Ngamarama stream, and up the Leyland O’Brien tramway track, passing the odd relics from bygone days of hard work and toil. We will arrive at the newish and nicely appointed Te Whare Okioki hut.

This hut is part of the Kaimai ridgeway project in which our Club in conjunction with several other Clubs have been involved in over the years.  About 10.5 kilometers 3.5 hours of reasonably easy going tramping but you will need to be medium fit, as we want to cover this distance in reasonably good time, expect some stream crossings, possible damp feet as well as some mud.  A good set of boots are recommended.

Sunday. Return along part of the North South track and down the Ngamarama track to complete a loop to the bus. 10 kilometers about 3.5 hours.

Options are available for a distance party if we get enough interest.

Same as the Saturday but branch off to Mangamuka hut (4 bunks) for the night, 4 hours. Need to bring a tent.

Sunday return Te tuhi track onto the Ngamarama track to the bus. or follow back to the junction and head to Te Whare Okioki hut to return with the short party?

Note this hut has been booked so if you are not in quick enough, you will be sleeping in your tent?
