8 North Shore Reserves in 1 day!

  • 2 Aug 2020
  • 9:00 AM
  • Meet at Chelsea Primary School in Onetaunga Road

This tramp will take us through some of the lesser-known North Shore reserves.  We will cover 8 separate reserves, and will see some great examples of young Kauri, some great views of Auckland skyline, and visit a little-known pa site.

At about 15 km and 450 m climb, it is suitable for anyone of moderate fitness but there are bail-out options for anyone who is tiring.  Bring footwear with good tread as some of the tracks are steep and greasy, and Clean Footwear please as this area has some of Auckland’s best kauri reserves.

Park outside Chelsea Primary School in Onetaunga Road.  From here we skirt the military base and cut through the bush to Kauri Point Beach.  We then cross the top of Soldiers Bay and climb through Muriel Fisher Reserve to Island Bay Rd.  From there we go up Island Bay and Rangatira Road, then follow Waipa Rd and Mokoia St to Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre.

The path cuts into Birkenhead War Memorial Park next to the small museum, which will take us to Park Hill Road and out to Glenfield Road.  We enter Kauri Glen Reserve via Pupuke Rd and Tui Glen Road, and come out the other side at Kauri Road.  We cross Onewa Road and then enter Le Roys Bush, which will take us via Glade Place to Hinemoa St. then down Rugby Road to Chelsea Bay Beach.

We go past the Sugar Refinery and enter Kauri Point Centennial Park via the Manger’s private road.  The track takes us past some headlands then we will have a short diversion to look at a seasonal pa site where Maori used to camp and catch and dry fish during the shark breeding season.

From here we work our way down to the coast to Kendalls Bay Reserve, then the highlight is 275 steps to get us back up to Onetaunga Road and the waiting cars.
