From the carpark we walk up through some mature pines to the edge of the iron sand mine at Waikato North Head, with views of Waikato River entrance and Port Waikato. We then drop down a very steep sand dune to the Waikato River mouth. After following the beach for a kilometre, we re-enter the forest and are soon faced with a stiff climb to the northern high point, then an easy grade through mature bush and back to the bus.
A varied and interesting group walk, suitable for trampers of moderate fitness.
