North Shore Tramping Club
We head south towards Tuakau. Our first stop is at the Alexandra Redoubt Reserve.
The 65th Regiment established the Alexandra Redoubt on a hill above the Waikato River as the invasion of Waikato began in July 1863. It was to be a base for control of the lower reaches of the river and protection of the supply lines of the invasion force. We will view the redoubt and complete the 1.8km loop around the reserve.
Then we will travel in the bus a short distance to the Tuakau Waikato River bridge and drive up to the small settlement of Onewhero. Here we will tramp in the Harker Reserve. Donated by the family for public use in 1984, it is a forest protected under Queen Elizabeth 2nd national trust.
The trail will take us thru a mixture of thick bush, open farmland (great view of the Waikato River basin) and onto the Vivien Falls.
We will return the same away except to do the other side of loop track in the middle part of the reserve.
