Lake Tarawera is a beautiful destination for a long weekend away, enjoying the longer and warmer days just after daylight saving begins. This is a two-night trip, both nights in a tent in a campsite. If you have a new tent or have not done away trip before, this would be a great opportunity to give tenting a go! Both campsites, Hot Water Beach and Tapahoro Outlet campsite are great spots with plenty of time for setting up your tent, enjoying the campsite and packing up the next day.

We will have two parties walking the same track towards each other, so two drivers are required please. This trip is special in having a water taxi ride on the second day between the two campsites. A trip not to be missed.

Okataina Party

Saturday drop-off at Okataina carpark and walk towards Tapahoro Outlet campsite via Humphries Bay. This walk is made up of two 2.5 hour walks, Eastern Okataina Walkway (2.5 hours) and Northern Tarawera Track (2.5 hours). Approximate time from drop off to Tapahoro Outlet campsite is 5 hours.

Sunday morning walk to Tarawera Falls (3 hours return) and time to pack up tents, have lunch and get ready for water-taxi pick-up at 2:10pm, arriving at Hot Water Beach at 2:35pm. Time to set up tents, swim and optional short walk taking the Isthmus Track to Lake Rotomahana which is part of Waimangu Volcanic Valley and is dominated by Mt Tarawera Volcano (40 minutes return).

Lake Rotomahana was internationally famous for its spectacular Pink and White Terraces, which were destroyed in the Mount Tarawera eruption of 1886.  Steaming cliffs and silica terraces still remain as a feature of this lake.

Monday is a 5 hour walk to the Buried Village, taking the most popular Tarawera Trail walk. After picking up the village party, return to Auckland.

Village Party

Saturday after arriving at the Buried Village, walk the Tarawera Trail to Hot Water Beach (5 hours). There will be time to set up tents, have dinner and enjoy the campsite and the views.

Sunday morning take the Isthmus Track to Lake Rotomahana (40 minutes return). Return to Hot Water Beach campsite for a relaxing swim and potentially cooking the Hot Water Beach camping style. A cookbook for some meal ideas will be available.  After lunch, pack up the tents and get ready for water-taxi pick-up at 1:30pm. Be at Tapahoro Outlet campsite by about 2pm, with enough time to set up tents. Once settled, an afternoon walk to Tarawera Falls (3 hours return) before dinner.
