Wairoa River, Hunua Ranges

  • 25 Feb 2018
  • 9:00 AM
  • The Strand, Takapuna
This track, part of the Te Araroa Trail , starts at the end of McNicol Road, Clevedon and follows the true right of the Wairoa River through some pretty stretches of bush. We walk on the flat for the first two kilometres before leaving the river to skirt around a gorge section before climbing to a track intersection. The track then heads steeply downhill and back towards the river. Then we go through a small pine plantation and follow the river until we reach Massey Road and the access road to Cossey’s Dam.

Fifteen minutes’ walk up the road and into the Cossey’s gorge walk, which soon splits into two tracks: the dam on the left and the falls to the right. Down lots of steps, then rock-hop across the river. Up to the lookout with great views of the Hunua Falls, then down to the base of the falls for lunch. Then we have the choice of retracing our steps entirely, or going via Massey Road back to the Wairoa River.

A fast group could do both the dam and the falls.
