| Trips - What to ExpectAs a tramping club, on a day trip, expect to walk for 5 or more hours on a variety of uneven terrains. Trips are held wet or fine and generally there is no requirement to book.
Trampers are grouped according to capability. If you are a non-member, please contact the Organiser prior to the trip for further information and to check the suitability of the tramp for you. See Useful Info for recommendations on gear to take and please arrive 15 mins early for briefing etc. We look forward to meeting you! See at the end of this page for information about longer trips: - Easter Weekend - Kauaeranga Valley 15 January 2012 MURIWAI Starting from the Muriwai Beach carpark take the steps up to the Gannet Colony lookouts. Then Maori Bay track/Quarry track and Edwin Mitchelson track to Oaia Road. Walk northwards along this road then turning into Motutara Road.Into Houghtons Bush Camp and down Houghtons track to Houghtons Farm. Keeping to the seaward side pass Lake Okaihau and through a low lying forestry area alongside the Okirtoto stream to exit at the northern end of Coast Road.From here go along forestry roads in the southern end of Woodhill Forest and climb up Pulpit Rock for magnificent views across the treetops to the coast. Then out to the beach for the walk back to the southern end and the club bus. A tramp suitable for all with a moderate degree of fitness. Auckland City Walk to Upper Kauri/Smyth Ridge/ Kuataika tracks to Anawhata Road. Along Anawhata Road to White track/Marawhara Walk then a short road walk through to the northern end of Garden Road.Nikau Grove Walk/Maungaroa Lookout track to the end of Glen Esk Road. Those wanting a shorter walk can go with the bus to Glen Esk Road for a Home track/Centennial track/McElwain LoopWalk/Quarry track/McKenzie Junction/Maungaroa Ridge track Maungaroa Lookout track/Nikau Grove Walk/Garden Road/Glen Esk Road loop back to the bus. Time: 9.00 am at The Strand Organiser: Pierre Bonny 4770887 Cost: $10.00 Adult / $5 Junior $15 Non members Wed 25 January 2012 - SOCIAL NIGHT - Senior Citizens Hall, Takapuna The first social get-together of the year for NSTC will be held on Wednesday, 25th January 2012, at the Senior Citizens' Hall, the Strand, Takapuna, from 7:30pm onwards, and will include a presentation of photos and commentary by club member Jane Mackay on her trip to Northern India. Come along and enjoy the show as well as the company of fellow trampers. Library books available to borrow and supper to follow. Time 7:30pm,at the Senior Citizens' Hall, the Strand, Takapuna. See here for how to find the hall. 29 January 2012 (Anniversary weekend) - WAITAKERES - Anawhata Stream Tramp and swim your way through beautiful pools and gorge as we descend the Anawhata stream right down to the beach. Dry options are: Medium group: Chateau mosquito, Sisam, Smythe Ridge Track, Wainamu Bush Track, Long Rd to Simla, Chateau mosquito. Short group: Drop off first at Kuataika, Smyth Ridge Track, Sisam, Chateau Mosquito. Great views of the west coast from Kuataika Trig. If you contact the Auckland city “park line” (366 2000) you should be able to book for the Monday night at least and join us for two days. We would love to have your company in paradise. Time: 9am at the Strand Organiser: Pierre Bonny 4770887 Cost: $10.00 Adult / $5 Junior $15 Non members 19th February 2012 – WAITAKERES - Mercer Bay A “must do” trip. We will descend the steep slopes down to Mercer Bay. Then we will have a look at the cave and then, if sea and sand conditions permit, we will attempt to go around the corner and enter the spectacular “cathedral”. There will be another party option in the Ahu Ahu & Karekare area for those who do not fancy the steep scramble down to the beach. Note this trip departs from Como Street, Takapuna as there will be a triathlon affecting access to The Strand. See here to find the location. From here a number of options for fast, medium and slow groups to do tracks in the vicinity of Smyth Corner before returning to Anawhata Road Time: 9.00am at The Strand Organiser: Roger Parsons 4190552 Cost: $10.00 Adult / $5 Junior $15 Non members 4 March 2012 - OREWA / WHANGAPARAOA First up a circuit of Alice Eves Scenic Reserve at the northern end of Orewa beach. Then south along the beach to do a series of tracks and roads along the northern side of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula to finish at Army Bay. A fast group could do additional distance in Shakespear Park. An incoming tide in the afternoon should make for a cooling swim so bring your togs if you so wish. Time: 9.00am at The Strand Organiser: Pam Burdett 4836635 Cost: $10.00 Adult / $5 Junior $15 Non members 11 March 2012- WAITAKERES - Arataki / Lower NihoTupu Reservoir The new Beveridge Track is now open linking Arataki to Jacobsen's Depot and then to Mackie's Rest. Along Exhibition Drive down past the Big Tree and along the concrete encased pipeline to do a circuit of Sharps Bush. Retracing our steps to Mackie's Rest, down the Rat Track and along the Grass Track to Huia Road. Across the face of the dam for a lunch stop at the Ranger Station Workshop. From here split into two groups with a fast one doing Lower Nihotupu Dam Road, Incline Track to Greenwoods Corner, a loop around Rangemore Track then back up Scenic Drive to Arataki.A medium group doing Lower Nihotupu Dam Road, Pipeline Track and Slip Track back to Arataki. The shorter distance group will loop round to Church bay area and then back to Matiatia via the coastal route from Oneroa via Owhanaki and the olive groves. A longer option will go in direction of Park Point and then loop back on part of the coastal route to Matiatia Ferry leaves at 9.10am from Devonport fares are $28 if you book on line www.fullers.co.nz or $35 on the day – Supergold card holders free Return at 4.00pm, or 2.00 pm if you must! Organiser : Trish Jenner Phone: 4453645 28 March 2012 - Social meeting: Senior Citizens Hall, the Strand, Takapuna 7.30 This will be a show on Switzerland, the Haute Route, again with photos, presented by Trish and Roger. 1 April 2012 – WAITAKERES - Chateau Mosquito / RGB Starting from the Anawhata Road end of Chateau Mosquito Track. A loop taking in Chateau Mosquito Track, Sisam Track, Ridge Road, RGB Track and back along Chateau Mosquito to the bus that should take around 4 hours plus lunch. A fast group could add in an Upper Kauri Track, Lower Kauri Track, Long Road loop to and from Smythe Corner to create a figure of eight.
