SUMMARY:Te Urewera National Park\, Labour weekend
LOCATION:Carpark cnr Auburn & Como Sts\, Takapuna
DESCRIPTION:https://www.nstc.org.nz/event-2614127\n\nBetween Te Urewera’s Maungapahatu\, sacred misty mountain of Tuhoe\, and Lake Waikaremoana\, the bathing waters of their ancestors\, lies Mt Manuoha and Lake Waikareiti. Te Uruwera NP has very different forest vegetation compared to the northern regions we usually tramp in. Huge beech trees\, covered in moss at the higher elevations\; monster fuchsia trees with scaly bark\; tiny\, delicate flowers … and so much more.\n This weekend tramp caters for those wanting a great challenge\, and also those wanting some good tramping during the day while being able to return each night to a warm hut in a terrific lakeside location.\n Out party:\n Manuoha – Waikareiti Track (32 km\; 18 hrs)\n This track will suit the fit party and strong–medium trampers. The track climbs to extensive views from the trig at the highest point in the park (1\,392m) and Manuoha hut for Saturday night. The next day is long\, but easier\, continuing towards Lake Waikareiti’s Sandy Bay hug or a campsite on the way for Sunday night. On Monday morning\, walk 4 hours out to the bus.\n Hut party:\n Another party will tramp a good track for 4 hours or so into the cosy Sandy Bay hut and campsite for both Saturday and Sunday nights. This hut is situated beside Waikareiti Lake. Those based here can do a day walk to Ruapani Lake. And if we hire a dinghy we can explore the six islands on Lake Waikareiti.\n Depart: 7:00 pm Friday cnr Auburn and Como Streets\, Takapuna\n Return: Early evening Monday 23 October\n Booking:\n Use the link on the new NSTC website or contact Karen (booking officer) 021 118 2073.\n Cost: \n Bus $115 plus hut fees:\n * Manuoha hut\, $5 standard ticket or DOC hut pass\n\n\n * Sandy Bay\, $15 per night\; self-book with DOC online here for Saturday 21 Oct and Sunday 22 October\n\nThe Sandy Bay Hut is now full on the Sunday night.
