Freedom Camping Act, DOC prohibited areas 22/10/2011
DOC have published the list of areas where freedom camping is prohibited under the new Act. If you are caught camping in one of these areas then you can be hit with an instant fine of $200 per person. Please see this web page: http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/freedom-camping/prohibited-conservation-areas/ Note that the Ketetahi Road carpark, where we slept the night in January this year, is now a prohibited area. Local councils may also specify prohibited areas, but, unlike DOC, there is no easy way to find out where these areas are. Add Comment DOC News 20/06/2011
